Both the IELTS Academic and General Training tests assess your English language proficiency, but they cater to different purposes. This blog post, from English Den Enterprise, a leading IELTS training center in Ikorodu, Nigeria (https://www.englishden.com.ng/ielts-training-center-in-ikorodu), will guide you through the key distinctions between these two tests, helping you determine which one best suits your needs.

Understanding the IELTS Test

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a globally recognized English language proficiency test for non-native speakers. It is accepted by universities, immigration authorities, and professional bodies worldwide. There are two main types of IELTS tests:

IELTS Academic: This test is designed to assess whether you have the language skills necessary to succeed in an academic environment. It is typically required for admission to universities and other higher education institutions.

IELTS General Training: This test is designed to assess your ability to communicate in English for everyday purposes, such as work, migration, or social situations.

Key Differences Between IELTS Academic and General Training

Here's a breakdown of the key differences between the two IELTS tests:

Test Format:

Both IELTS Academic and General Training tests consist of four modules: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. However, the content and difficulty level of these modules differ between the two tests.

Listening: The Academic Listening test focuses on academic topics, such as lectures and seminars, while the General Training Listening test focuses on everyday situations, such as conversations and announcements.

Reading: The Academic Reading test features passages from academic journals and textbooks, while the General Training Reading test uses materials from newspapers, magazines, and other non-academic sources.

Writing: The Academic Writing test requires you to write essays that demonstrate your analytical and argumentative skills. The General Training Writing test focuses on writing tasks related to personal, social, or workplace situations.

Speaking: Both Speaking tests assess your fluency, vocabulary, and grammar. However, the Academic Speaking test may involve discussions on academic topics, while the General Training Speaking test focuses on everyday conversation scenarios.

Scoring:

Both tests are scored on a band scale of 0 to 9, with 9 being the highest score. However, the specific score requirements for academic and professional institutions may vary.

Who Should Take Which Test?

The choice between IELTS Academic and General Training depends on your specific goals.

Take the IELTS Academic test if:

You are applying for undergraduate or postgraduate studies abroad.

You need to register for professional programs such as medical licensing, that require proof of English proficiency.

Take the IELTS General Training test if:

You are planning to migrate to an English-speaking country, such as UK, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand.

You need to meet the English language requirements for work purposes.

Tips for Choosing the Right Test

Consider your goals: Clearly define your reasons for taking the IELTS test. Are you aiming for academic pursuits or professional opportunities?

Research institution requirements: Check the specific English language proficiency requirements of the universities, immigration authorities, or professional bodies you are applying to.

Take a practice test: Familiarize yourself with the format and content of each test by taking a practice test online or through a preparatory course offered by English Den Enterprise.

Conclusion

By understanding the key differences between IELTS Academic and General Training, you can make an informed decision about which test is right for you. Linguistically & professionally termed Synthetic Phonics, it is a method of Language teaching (English Language as far as this post is concerned) that emphaises on blending phonemes (the distinct unit of a sound) with graphemes (the smallest unit of writing system e.g: A - Z), in such a way that learners have mastery of the 44 sounds. As a matter of practice, the graphemes are ignored at the early stage of language learning. The questions for us as schools, teachers, parents or learners are: “is my school teaching the core phonics? Are my teachers up to standard? Is my ward learning the right English phonemes? Do I have the required teaching skills?”

No doubt, the teaching of “phonics” has proven to be highly meritorious for the early generation of English Language learners, as it develops their reading skills, using the strategy called “sounding out”. Similarly, there is a tremendous improvement on their spelling confidence and high development in phonemic awareness. However, this English learning approach does not in anyway contribute to comprehension of the reading texts. While most of these pupils read, very few amongst them can explain what they have read, thereby resulting to mere cacophonous pleasure of recitation.

Just recently again, I heard my 5 year old baby, Femi, reciting “ah”, “bah”, “ka”, “de”, “fi”, “ge”… in a rhythmic succession and I asked him what he was reading and he said: “daddy, it’s the English Alphabet”. I was marveled. This I know has been experienced by most parents whose kids attend private schools. The truth is, attentions of parents, teachers and schools have shifted to accent and intonation rather than the core communications skills, which ironically hype-up the school, pupils and teachers as reputable, proficient and intelligent respectively.

The point is, nothing is wrong with the “phonics” or synthetic phonics but something is wrong with the modality for teaching and those teaching it. It is important to consider the academic background of the “phonic teachers”. So far that I have known, few of these teachers are English graduates, either at NCE or degree level – they are teachers whose certifications are acquired via a three month phonetic programme, thereby having a peripheral knowledge of the subject matter.

Synthetic phonics has reasonable numbers of paedagogical styles such as Analytical Phonics, Analogy Based Phonics, Embedded Phonics,… how many of our instructors know there usages and when to use them? Eventually, learners have problems decoding diagraphs (a double consonant forming a sound) or letters with complex pronunciations. Because early English language learners “generalize”, how will the phonic tutor systematically teach diagraphs like “ph”, “ck”, “wr”… when already they have been indoctrinated to imbibe “letter “f” as in /f/, c as in /k, “r” as in /r/ respectively or how would he explain “few”, “know”… when the pupils already learnt individual phonemes and would not pronounce the above as /fiewu/ and /knou/.

It is high time our schools be on the alert on the quality of teachers teaching “phonics” and stop the recruitment of 3 months certified phonic teachers and let the real English teachers take charge. It is also worthy of noting that the English graphemes cannot be ignored and should be systematically revived at later years of learning, as it forms the basis of English Language learning.

Many teachers expect their students not to criticize whatever they say in their lessons. They should just accept it hook, line and sinker. They expect their students to always stand and greet them when they get to their class. Some even expect their students to bend while greeting them. They expect their students to fear them as they feared their teachers. They see students who politely point out errors in their lessons as being rude and uncouth. Many teachers really want their students to act like they did in their days.

Those of us who went to school in the 80s and early 90s can boldly affirm that we were in our days different from the students of today. There are many things students do today that we would never have thought of doing in our days. I will prove this assertion later in this write-up.

These days, many teachers have difficulty coping with the behavioural patterns and mannerisms that students exhibit in school. As a matter of fact, many teachers have been frustrated out of the teaching profession because they could not cope with the increasing demands of modern teaching and modern students. Before we lose all our brilliant teachers to other professions, serious efforts must be made to educate teachers about the nature of the modern students. This humble article from me is, therefore, an attempt to lend a voice to the discourse on the make-up of the modern students. This effort, I hope, will provide teachers with tips on how to deal with their students, and consequently, begin to derive maximum enjoyment from their seemingly frustrating profession.

Let me begin by highlighting some of the characteristics of the students of yesterday.

1. Their only sources of knowledge and information were their teachers, textbooks, and possibly, their parents.

2. They had no access to the internet or social media. They hardly knew what was happening in other states or climes.

3. They hardly criticized information given to them by their teachers. They literarily treated every piece of information given by their teachers like a verse from the Scriptures or Gospel truth.

4. They dreaded being reported to their teachers by their parents.

5. They respected (sometimes, feared) their teachers.

6. They stood up to greet when their teachers came into their classrooms.

7. They couldn't bear the thought of writing petitions against their errant teachers to the Principal, the Ministry or any government agency.

8. They were content with their school meals and occasional stipends handed to them as pocket money by their parents.

9. They accepted half-truths and faulty descriptions of other states or countries as related to them from textbooks by their teachers since they hardly holidayed outside their states or country.

How time flies! A lot of things have changed in our school system. The students of today are not characterised by the attributes mentioned above. I present below some of the attributes of today's students:

1. They have been to the states or countries their teacher wants to talk about. They can easily detect falsehood in their teacher's statement.

2. They have access to the internet and social media. They can read ahead of the class and consequently pose difficult questions to their teacher in class.

3. They only respect their deserving (sometimes, permissive or indulgent) teachers. They do not fear their teachers.

4. They hardly fear being reported to their teachers as most schools have abolished corporal punishment.

5. They are highly inquisitive and critical. They hardly believe whatever that cannot be proved scientifically

6. They want to be treated by their teachers as partners, not as servants or empty slates.

7. They believe that respect is a two-way thing. *If my teacher respects me, I respect him.*

7. They prefer reading fictions, comics and story books to reading their school notes or textbooks.

8. There is hardly any amount of money they cannot bring to or spend in school

To succeed as a modern teacher, you need the following:

1. Read widely in your assigned subject(s). The students know teachers who are good at their subjects. Consult some of the educational sites which your students may also consult.

2. Relate with your students as partners in progress. Your relationship with them should never be a master-slave type.

3. Earn your students' respect through quality teaching and mutual respect. Students seldom respect teachers who do not respect them.

4. Let your students understand that you believe in all of them and have high expectations of each of them.

5. Involve your students in setting rules for your class. Give them a reason to believe that you value their opinions.

6. Be ready to answer their questions and accept their constructive criticisms.

7. Apologise when you are wrong.

8. Do not assume that you are the only one who is knowledgeable in class. Allow your children to teach some topics, share their experiences and lead discussions in class periodically. In such instances, you will just coordinate and provide additional information.

9. If you have to discipline your students for wrong-doing, let them know why you have to discipline them and let your disciplinary measure be corrective and not destructive.

It is important that teachers understand the make-up of today's students and stop comparing them to themselves when they were in school. A lot of things have changed. If we fail to recognize this truth and continue to expect our students to behave the way we behaved in our days, we may never cease to complain about our profession. We would enjoy our profession maximally if we adopt methods that suit our modern students, and see them as our partners in progress., and not as our apprentices, or tabula rasa.

This article does not in any way attempt to urge teachers to become indulgent or tolerant of improper behaviour from students. Rather, it aims to help teachers understand the nature of their students so that they can adapt their methods to suit their students' needs and make-up.

Adapted from Teachers Advocacy Whatsapp Group
